Chapter Twelve

IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE what her life had come to in such a short time. It seemed as if only yesterday she was shuffling Adam and Melody to school in Kaylee’s minivan.

Now, she was sitting helpless in one of the bedrooms in her estranged husband’s new home. Two days home from the hospital and she already felt as if it’d been forever.

Coming to terms with the knowledge that she was unable to walk scared her to death. Although Daphne said she’d regain use of her legs with regular therapy, no one could tell how long it’d take. It could be weeks, months, even years. Neela wasn’t sure if she could live in the same house with Caleb that long.

There were so many unanswered questions, so many what ifs.

Was Caleb seeing anyone? Were he and Lori still together? That thought brought a stinging pain to her chest. Yet, these were questions that had plagued her night and day for the past five years.

Sighing heavily, she continued to flip through the photo album on her lap. Her hand paused on a picture of her and Caleb. It had been taken on their visit to Pitch Lake.

Unconsciously, she ran an index finger over his face. It would have been hard not to have fallen in love with him then. Caleb used to be such a loving and gentle man. She could never understand what had changed after their marriage.

Neela had never really been afraid of anyone or anything before, but the side of Caleb she’d seen back then had scared her more than she’d ever have admitted. His violent outbursts would often leave her wondering what had made him like that.

Flipping another page, she smiled when her eyes landed on another picture of him. In this one, droplets of water clung to his skin and hair as he emerged from the sea. Neela remembered that particular time. Just like then, she felt her heart stop. That’s when she’d known she was falling for him. Ever since then, she couldn’t remember a time when she didn’t love him. Even when she hated him, she still loved him.

A soft knock sounded on the bedroom door and pulled her from her daze. Shutting the album, she put it aside and almost panicked as she wondered who was on the other side. She prayed it wasn’t Caleb because she didn’t have the strength or courage to rehash the past right now.

The knock sounded again, this time accompanied by his voice. “Neela, can I come in? I need to talk to you about something.”

Briefly shutting her eyes, she swallowed and calmed her mind before she answered from her place on the large bed, “Yes, you can come in.” She wanted to get this over with.

The door swung open and revealed the man on the other side. To her, Caleb would always be the only man for her. This man she would love until the day she died.
